The Poisson equation \(\nabla^2 u = g\) is a second order partial differential equation that rears its beautiful head in a variety of physics and engineering disciplines, for example fluid mechanics or electromagnetism. As such, “solve the Poisson equation” is a subroutine seen in many science codes.
